Lubuagan Kalinga Translation

The week of working with the Lubuagan Kalinga translation team has come to a close. I think we had a productive time and good progress is being made. The translators have learned how to use some of the new tools in our translation software.

Today we were invited to have lunch with Bishop Andaya. He actually grew up in Lubuagan, so he is very eager to see this translation completed. Bishop Andaya is a most gracious and generous host. We had an excellent meal with lots of great conversation. Filipinos love to play with words and to make jokes about the pecularities of their many varied languages and dialects. Even though there is much similarity among the various Kalinga languages, each one also has its pecularities which provides lots of material for joking. Another topic of conversation around the table was the plan to hold a "Bible Week" in Lubuagan in January - conveniently when Ginny and I next plan to be here. Bishop Andaya had lots of great creative ideas of how to make the Bible week a meaningful and life transforming time for the Lubuagan community. I am looking forward to being part of it already.

Since Kalinga communities, like the rest of the Philippines are predominantly Catholic, we consider it important to have the Bishop's endorsement of the translation and to have that articulated in the published Scriptures so that there will be no hesitation in the community to use it. In order to do this the Bishop needs to have one of his people read and verify the quality of the translation. Fortunately Lubuagan has produced several priests and nuns and Bishop Andaya is giving consideration to who would be the best one to read the text.

Tomorrow, Christy plans to host a small prayer gathering here at the house where we will remember the sacrifice of Pedro, her dad who gave his life 26 years ago in the service of the Limos Kalinga translation. If you haven't yet seen it, check out the story in the interview that Syrine and I did for ListenUp TV in June. It is posted on YouTube here: http://youtu.be/N_xJ1TDq1V0
